Navigation for beginners

Become more independent in the mountains. This is a great course if you want to lean how to use a map & compass whilst also being safe in the mountains.

South Wales Navigation for Beginners

Objectives

  • Learn what a map represents & scales

  • Learn how to use a compass and follow a bearing

  • Understand how contours work, and what they look like

  • How to orientate a map

  • Identify features to locate yourself

  • Understand digital maps and their place in safety

  • What to do if it all goes wrong

Details

We will meet at 9:30 and review the basics before heading into the hills. Being this is a day of learning the pace will be steady. We don’t specify a distance, but we can cover roughly 10km throughout the day.

Once we are in the hills we will cover all the aspects mentioned above, plus anything else that comes up in conversation. We want to make sure you get the most from the day, helping you progress closer to your goals.

  • We are based in South Wales, and is where a majority of our courses are held. If you are in another part of the country, we may be able to help, please get in touch.

  • Whilst our navigation for beginners course has a minimum of two, we still cater for solo bookings. We can do a one-to-one navigation day for £100.

  • We recommend you bring:

    • Walking boots

    • Full waterproofs

    • Gloves & hat

    • Map & compass (can be provided if required)

    • Food & water

    • Personal first aid kit

  • Depending on what date you select, we will send you an information pack and booking confirmation with an exact location to meet along with if parking is free and what facilities are near by.

  • Charlie will be your guide and coach. We do sometimes have other guides join us, we will let you know your guide in the booking confirmation.

  • We can still help! Give us an email with what dates you have available and we will add more days where we can to the schedule.

Mountain Runner skills

This is a great course to take your skills in the mountains to the next level.

Details

We will meet at 9:30 and review the basics before heading into the hills. Being this is a day of learning the pace will be steady. We don’t specify a distance, but we can cover roughly 20km throughout the day.

Once we are in the hills we will cover all the aspects mentioned above, plus anything else that comes up in conversation. We want to make sure you get the most from the day, helping you progress closer to your goals.

Minimum 2 people Maximum 4

  • A large portion of the day is dedicated to moving on technical terrain

  • Efficient movement up and downhill.

  • Understand digital maps and their place in safety

  • What to do if it all goes wrong

  • Using a GPS watch vs map & compass

Come and join us for a full weekend.
We will take you on a journey to look at all aspects which can help you be more independent in the mountains.
