Our Top Tips for Winter Running

The days of finishing work, getting out on a run, and returning before dark are behind us. It’s time to dust off that headtorch, which is probably hiding behind that Michael Buble CD!

Whilst winter running adds an extra level of complexity, with a little extra planning, it can be just as fun and rewarding. Here are some of our top tips that will help you get out the door, and continue to have fun.

Find your crew

Being a solo runner in the winter months can be tough. When winter comes around join in with friends that run. In our group, we each take it in turns to plan a route local to ourselves. This is a great way of not only exploring new trails, but having a level of accountability to keep getting out there.

Fit Check!

Wearing appropriate clothing for the conditions is always important. Having some winter run clothing can make your run more fun, and safer. If your route does involve road, and potential traffic, then make sure you are visible.
Clothing that is highly visible, and not dark colours really helps. We don’t think running in a high-vis jacket is necessary, but taking a moment to think how you would look to a car traveling at speed in the dark is critical.
Gloves and hats can make a big difference also. I have been on too many runs where I forgot gloves! If you wear a watch the cold affects HR reading, and you end up with an ice block on your wrist, giving you a cold hand.

Decent headtorch

Having a decent bulb on your noggin can really make a difference. One thing we would recommend investing in. There are lots of recommendations out there saying 3/400 Lumens are enough. On the trail though we beg to differ! The best middle ground we have found is the Petzl Swift (£90 roughly) its packs over 900 lumens and a long-lasting battery. Oh, and make sure you have charge in the morning, and not 10 minutes before your run!

Embrace the grim

Rain, mud, wind, darkness. Sorry to dampen your spirits, but it’s coming! Whilst winter training might not be the best time to be attempting those PB’d and getting Strava crowns, it’s a great time to embrace the grim. Building your mental resilience and toughness through the hard winter months is a great emulator of when times get tough in an ultra.

Staying hydrated and fed

It might not feel like it but staying hydrated and fed are just as important as in summer. When it’s cold out its easier to forget or feel like you don’t need to drink. It’s all about embracing the seasons and adapting your routine to make sure you can continue your running and have fun.

Bonus

Warm Up!

We add this as a bonus because, in theory, you are already warming up for all your runs, right? If it’s cold out there, just take a few extra minutes in the housewarming up before you get going. You can read our blog on why it’s so important here.

Get a running coach

Having a running coach through winter months adds a layer of accountability even your friends or spouse might not be able to match.  Our training plans are highly adaptable to your life. So, if you do miss a run, we can change it around for you also giving you words of encouragement to get out there and smash your goals!
